The Best All Wheel Drive Sedans

2015 Tesla Model S

Any list of the best all-wheel drive sedans must begin with a caveat. There is actually no set definition of a sedan. Essentially, sedans are mid-sized, four-door cars priced from about $25,000 - $50,000.

While many of the most popular sedans, such as the Chevy Malibu, are front-wheel drive only, several sedans are now available in all-wheel drive (AWD). Delivering power to all four wheels, AWD gives the vehicle noticeably better acceleration and somewhat improved traction, though at the cost of a slight reduction in fuel efficiency.

Be aware. AWD does not necessarily improve a vehicle's overall safety or handling. Nor are these vehicles meant for "off-roading."

10 of the Best AWD Sedans in 2015

Here are ten of the top all-wheel drive sedans you can buy in 2015.
  1. Audi A6
  2. Subaru Legacy
  3. Nissan Altima
  4. Cadillac CTS
  5. Ford Fusion
  6. Infiniti Q50
  7. Chrysler 300
  8. Hyundai Genesis
  9. Buick Regal
  10. Tesla Model S

Audi A6

2015 Audi A6

The 2015 Audi A6 is the rare sedan with good looks that mask its striking power and handling. With its sleek lines and pleasing interior, the A6 will impress even the most discriminating buyers. The A6 garners a respectable EPA-estimated 25/33 mpg, though the optional TDI engine gets slightly better.

If you've long pined for a Mercedes-Benz sedan, you may wish to consider the Audi A6, which combines the best of old and new Europe. Of course, it's not just about appearance. The A6 handles well, offers generous legroom and includes a host of welcome features. These include parking sensors, a backup camera, an optional Bang & Olufsen audio system and one of the better touchscreen displays on the market.

NHTSA SAFETY RATING: 5 (of 5) stars overall. 5 for Frontal Crash. 5 for Side Crash. 5 for Rollover.

Subaru Legacy

2015 Subaru Legacy

There may be no better all-wheel drive sedan, at least for a young family, than the Subaru Legacy. The Legacy handles well, has a stellar safety record, and holds on to much of its value.

The standard four-cylinder engine is fine for most, and helps achieve a satisfactory 26/36 estimated mpg. One of the best all-wheel drive sedans by value, the Legacy feels more refined than its sticker price suggests. A noticeable downside is that backseat legroom is tight.

There are several optional, though recommended safety features. The best include blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, which can automatically adjust as you get nearer another vehicle, and a lane departure warning system

NHTSA SAFETY RATING: 5 (of 5) stars overall. 5 for Frontal Crash. 5 for Side Crash. 5 for Rollover.

Nissan Altima

2015 Nissan Altima

The 2015 Nissan Altima is an affordable all-wheel drive sedan that offers sporty appeal and reliability. The Altima garners a very good EPA-estimated 27/38 mpg. The seats are comfortable, there's plenty of legroom and there's also adequate trunk space. If you're in the market for a great family car, definitely consider the Nissan Altima.

NHTSA SAFETY RATING: 5 (of 5) stars overall. 5 for Frontal Crash. 5 for Side Crash. 4 for Rollover.

Cadillac CTS

2015 Cadillac CTS

If you're hoping for a more upscale sedan, the 2015 Cadillac CTS may be your very best choice. The CTS was rated as the #1 "upscale midsize" car by critics polled in US News & World Report. This is due in part to the car's great looks, pleasing interior and hearty acceleration, particularly with the optional twin-turbo V6 engine.

The interior is comfortable, handling is excellent, though fuel efficiency is nothing special, with an estimated 20/30 mpg. This is mitigated somewhat by the luxurious feel of the interior, the large seats and ample leg room. As is typical for Cadillac, there are a wide range of options available, including a Bose audio system, heated rear seats, parking assist and sunroof. If you are in the market for a Mercedes or BMW sedan, definitely take a look at the Cadillac CTS.

NHTSA SAFETY RATING: 5 (of 5) stars overall. 5 for Frontal Crash. 5 for Side Crash. 5 for Rollover.

Ford Fusion

2015 Ford Fusion

The 2015 Ford Fusion is a very affordable sedan. While others may prefer the Mazda 6 or Honda Accord, if you're in the market for an all-wheel sedan at the low-end of the pricing spectrum, definitely consider the Fusion.

Fusion's handling is solid, though acceleration is somewhat lagging. The car garners 22/34 mpg, which is only average. On the plus side, the interior looks and feels more like what's found in pricier models. There is plenty of passenger space and the MyFord Touch infotainment system is one of the more popular versions on the market. For the family on a budget, test drive the Ford Fusion all-wheel drive.

NHTSA SAFETY RATING: 5 (of 5) stars overall. 5 for Frontal Crash. 4 for Side Crash. 4 for Rollover.

Infiniti Q50

2015 Infiniti Q50

The 2015 Infiniti Q50 is a luxury all-wheel sedan that stands out for its high-quality interior, spacious seating, and comfortable ride. The Q50 only gets an EPA-estimated 20/29 mpg city/highway, though its six-cylinder engine offers excellent acceleration.

There are so many options, such as individual seating and steering settings, that some potential buyers may be overwhelmed. There's the optional leather upholstery, a 14-speaker Bose audio system, and a host of optional safety features, including blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and what Infiniti calls "Around View Monitor," a 360-degree multi-camera that may prove useful in tricky parking spaces.

If you're looking for an upscale all AWD sedan, one that's not quite as expensive, the Inifiti Q50 is a solid choice.

2014 NHTSA SAFETY RATING (2014 numbers provided; 2015 not yet rated): 5 (of 5) stars overall. 4 for Frontal Crash. 5 for Side Crash. 5 for Rollover.

Chrysler 300

2015 Chrysler 300

The Chrysler 300 is big, smooth and comfortable. It has an enveloping interior, intuitive infotainment touchscreen system, and offers a quiet ride and ample trunk space. It's a hard car not to like. The 300 only gets 19/31 mpg, however. The engine is powerful, particularly the optional V6, though the car is designed more for comfort and security than performance.

As is now typical for cars in its class, the 300 includes front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring.

NHTSA SAFETY RATING (2014 numbers provided; 2015 not yet rated): 5 (of 5) stars overall. 5 for Frontal Crash. 5 for Side Crash. 4 for Rollover.

Hyundai Genesis

2015 Hyundai Genesis

Surprise! Korea's Hyundai offers upscale automobiles as well as low-priced compacts. The 2015 all-wheel drive Genesis is comfortable on the inside and offers smooth handling and superior safety, although not impressive pick-up. The big V6 engine reduces gas mileage to only 18/29 mpg.

The list of standard features is long, including rearview camera, HD radio, proximity key -- so you don't need to fumble for your keys -- and an 8-inch touchscreen navigation system. Optional features include a lane departure warning and blind spot detection. The interior of the Genesis offers upscale materials and a well-crafted finish.

At a price around $45,000, most will choose a more traditional brand, such as BMW or Cadillac. But for some buyers, the Genesis will feel just right.

NHTSA SAFETY RATING: 5 (of 5) stars overall. 5 for Frontal Crash. 5 for Side Crash. 5 for Rollover.

Buick Regal

Buick Regal

No, this really isn't your grandfather's Buick. The 2015 Buick Regal offers responsive handling and an attractive interior. Gas mileage is lacking, however, at 21/30 mpg.

The Regal's modern styling and quiet ride are appealing. The interior is elegant, with accessible dash controls. Front seats are very comfortable though rear seat headroom is tight. There is ample trunk room, however.

Regal's 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is intuitive and the popular OnStar service is available. Optional safety features also include blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control

NHTSA SAFETY RATING: 5 (of 5) stars overall. 4 for Frontal Crash. 5 for Side Crash. 4 for Rollover.

Tesla Model S

2015 Tesla Model S

If you can afford the fully electric and completely gorgeous Model S, and you are prepared for the limitations (and benefits) of driving without an internal combustion engine, there may be no better car than the Tesla.

Last updated in late 2014, the Tesla's advanced powertrain features off-the-charts acceleration, enabling the vehicle to go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. The ride is shockingly quiet, the touchscreen resembles a super-size iPad, and much of the vehicle seems as if it's from the future. Oh, and you never have to pay for gasoline.

Of course, electric engines have obvious limitations. You may be forced to alter your commute and change long-established driving habits to ensure you never end up with a dead battery.

?NHTSA SAFETY RATING: 5 (of 5) stars overall. 5 for Frontal Crash. 5 for Side Crash. 5 for Rollover.
